About this Event

The Office of Social Innovation is thrilled to invite you to a day of programming celebrating the Sanctuary Scholars program! Come for one event, or stay for both! We would love to see you there to share the important research and recent achievements of our students and staff.

12 pm - 1:30 pm - Book Launch: Defying Higher Education Borders with Migrant Students in Canada - Register Here (more info below)

2 pm - 3:30 pm, Transformation Cafe: Finding Sanctuary - Register (more info below)

The day's events begin with the launch of Defying Higher Education Borders with Migrant Students in Canada by Paloma E. Villegas and the Sanctuary Scholars program co-ordinator, Tanya Aberman. In conversation with moderator Rebecca Murray (University of Sheffield), Villegas and Aberman will discuss how migrant students with precarious immigration status have resisted exclusion, built supportive learning communities, and reimagined the university as a site of sanctuary, struggle, and possibility.

We will also celebrate the first graduating cohort of the Sanctuary Scholars program!

Free lunch provided by Scotthill Caribbean Cuisine!

ASL provided.

2pm - 3:30pm, Transformation Cafe: Finding Sanctuary

We will host one of the OSI's signature events, a Transformation Cafe, highlighting the research of Sanctuary Scholars at the OSI and beyond. How do universities participate in bordering practices, even when they present themselves as welcoming or inclusive spaces?

Featuring Daniella Chan and Montserrat Ballesteros from the Finding Sanctuary project, Brantella Williams and Fatima Mohamed from the S4 Collective and the Access, Protection, and Welcome project, and facilitated by Rebecca Murray from the Access, Protection, and Welcome project, this panel invites reflection on how “sanctuary” is imagined, practiced, and constrained within university spaces.

This Café offers participants an opportunity to not only listen, but join us in  thinking about our collective responsibility in creating more just universities that are welcoming to all.

Free snacks and desserts by Palestine Bakeshop!

ASL provided.
