Join Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, DarkSky San Diego County chapter, and the San Diego Astronomy Association for a star-studded night at the park!
We will be showing the short film Defending the Dark, a 30-minute documentary film about why light pollution is harmful to humans and wildlife and what we can do to protect the night skies. After the film showing, Cathy Handzel, the President of the DarkSky San Diego County Chapter, will give a talk on what we can do here in San Diego to help improve light pollution in our neighborhoods. Following the film and talk, we will join the San Diego Astronomy Association on the terrace for stargazing! SDAA will provide telescopes, but we also encourage folks to bring their binoculars.

About the speaker:
Cathy Handzel is the President of the DarkSky San Diego County chapter. She has always loved the experience of nighttime and gazing up at the moon and stars in the sky. Cathy began researching light pollution after noticing the bright LED streetlights and an increase of light trespassing into her home and yard from neighbors’ lighting. As a breast cancer survivor, she is committed to raising awareness about light pollution and its potential harmful effects on human health.
About the film:
Defending the Dark tells the story of protecting the largest dark sky area on the east coast. This area of northern Maine is used as an inspiration for what we can all do in our towns and cities to protect the night sky. Dark sky conservation benefits wildlife and their habitats, reduces health and safety risks to humans, saves energy, and reduces costs. Light pollution has devastating effects on migrating birds, native plants, and pollinators. Defending the Dark will leave you optimistic about the future and empowered to take action.
