As climate change and biodiversity loss accelerate, the ocean becomes not only a site of scientific urgency but also a space of creative inquiry that reveals new ways of knowing.
Deep Shift expands on the ideas at the heart of Into the Ocean: Journey Beneath, bringing together voices across art, science and technology to explore how we perceive, understand and relate to marine environments. From ecological research to immersive media, the symposium examines the shifting frameworks through which the ocean is encountered today.
In conjunction with World Ocean Day, the symposium will also host a special convening around the pre-launch of the United Nationsโ€™ Third World Ocean Assessment (WOA III), bringing together leaders from Singaporeโ€™s marine science and conservation communities to reflect on how institutions, research initiatives and community platforms can steward more sustainable relationships with marine environments.
By foregrounding the ocean as a dynamic, interdependent system, Deep Shift embraces an oceanic worldview that frames it as a frontier of discovery and a vital commons. The symposium explores shifts in perception that might inspire new practices, fostering empathy and responsibility for the marine ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.

This session traces how marine environments are made legible through intersecting ecological, scientific and curatorial practices, and how these modes of understanding shape the ways the ocean is studied and cared for. It considers how different forms of attention reveal the ocean as a vast, non-linear system shaped by both material processes and interpretive frameworks.
Magdalena Magiera introduces Into the Ocean as an exhibition framework that bridges scientific research and artistic inquiry into ocean ecosystems.
Professor Tit Meng Lim presents OceanXโ€™s work and outlines the ecological stakes of ocean research.

Building on ecological and scientific understandings of marine systems, this session explores how such knowledge is transformed through artistic and sensory practices. It examines how environmental data, biological processes and material phenomena are translated into spatial and experiential forms that open up new ways of engaging with the ocean.
Jana Winderen (artist) explores underwater listening as a mode of ecological understanding that reveals how marine soundscapes register biodiversity, environmental change and the impact of human activities.
Marco Barotti (artist) presents Coral Sonic Resilience, examining how bioacoustic research can be translated into sculptural and sonic interventions that support coral reef restoration.
Robertina ล ebjaniฤ (artist) navigates the thresholds between hydro-ecologies, interspecies relations and environmental histories, reflecting on how aquatic worlds register the traces of human impact.
Ersin Han Ersin (artist and director of Marshmallow Laser Feast) explores immersive and interdisciplinary approaches that translate complex environmental data into experiential forms of understanding and awareness.
Lachlan Turczan (artist) investigates the optical and sonic properties of water, using light, fluid dynamics and perception to reveal the ocean as an energetic and continuously shifting system.
bit.studio (creative technologists) demonstrates how environmental data can be transformed into spatial and digital experiences that make marine systems accessible to wider audiences.

Into the Ocean: Journey Beneath is a collaboration between ArtScience Museum and OceanX, making its world premiere this June. It invites visitors on a descent through the depths of the sea, from the sunlit surface waters to the darkest reaches of the ocean.
Conceived as an โ€œemersiveโ€ experience, the exhibition positions visitors as active participants in a journey beneath the waves, taking them into the oceanโ€™s shifting environments before resurfacing with new understanding. At the heart of the exhibition is extraordinary footage captured by OceanX, a leading ocean exploration and media organisation whose work has featured in major international documentaries including Blue Planet II by the BBC and the recent OceanXplorers series produced with National Geographic.
Using advanced submersibles capable of filming at all depths of the ocean, OceanX has documented environments that remain largely unseen. Much of the footage presented in the exhibition has never been shown publicly before. Vast, intimate, and precise, these cinematic scenes form the backbone of the exhibition, transforming scientific exploration into a powerful visual encounter with the oceanโ€™s beauty and fragility.
As visitors descend through the oceanโ€™s zones, from the visible, life rich surface to the deepest reaches of the sea, OceanXโ€™s footage is placed in dialogue with contemporary artworks and scientific specimens. The exhibition features works by internationally renowned artists such as Marshmallow Laser Feast, Marco Barotti, Jana Winderen, Robertina ล ebjaniฤ, Lachlan Turczan, Sissel Tolaas, Ong Kian Peng and bit.studio, alongside regional scientific research such as National University of Singaporeโ€™s long-term coral reef studies. Together, these perspectives illuminate the ocean as a dynamic, interconnected system that sustains life on Earth.
The exhibition extends beyond experience and education by engaging visitors in interactive activities that connect directly to marine conservation work. In doing so, Into the Ocean: Journey Beneath builds a living bridge between the gallery and the ocean itself, inviting participation in real world environmental action beyond the museum.
The exhibition makes the world beneath the waves accessible, emotionally resonant, and unforgettable. It inspires an oceanic worldview that reimagines our relationship with the planet and the future of the seas that sustain it.
