About this Event
Deep Fried Folk: A Celebration of Southern Folk Art invites you to experience the raw, unfiltered creativity of the South’s most iconic self-taught artists. This exhibition showcases the visionary works of Howard Finster, R.A. Miller, Purvis Young, Mose Tolliver, Butch Anthony, and Jimmy Lee Sudduth—artists whose pieces reflect the heart, soul, and storytelling traditions of the region. Through vibrant colors, repurposed materials, and deeply personal narratives, their work captures the spirit of Southern life, spirituality, and resilience, offering a window into a world where art is born from necessity, faith, and an unbreakable connection to community.
Folk art has long been overlooked in the broader art world, yet it carries a cultural significance that speaks to the ingenuity and expressive power of those outside formal artistic institutions. Deep Fried Folk seeks to elevate and honor these artists, whose works embody the traditions, struggles, and triumphs of the South. Whether through Finster’s celestial dreamscapes, Young’s layered urban tapestries, or Sudduth’s mud-and-paint portraits, this exhibition is a tribute to the beauty found in the everyday and the extraordinary. We invite you to immerse yourself in these works, to appreciate their depth, and to recognize Southern folk art as an essential part of America’s artistic heritage.
Enjoy complimentary drinks from Cathead and small bites, and connect with fellow art enthusiasts.
