Join artist Atarangi Anderson for a Deep dive lecture exploring her practice of making, research, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge through aute and the revitalisation of Māori barkcloth practices. Central to this work are relationships of teaching and learning, including tuakana–teina models through which skills, histories, and cultural knowledge are shared and sustained.
In this lecture, Anderson will discuss the methods, materials, and relationships that underpin her practice, reflecting on the ways knowledge is acquired through whakapapa, mentorship, observation, and making. Her work considers how learning emerges through relationships with materials, kin, ancestors, and the natural world.
Presented as part of CRIT: Art learning since 1987, audiences are invited to hear directly from the artist about the forms of knowledge that emerge through making and the responsibilities involved in carrying them forward.

BIOGRAPHY
Atarangi Anderson descends from Te Aitanga a Hauiti and Ngāti Hauiti. She holds a Bachelor of Creative Enterprise and a Master of Creative Practice from Unitec. Recent exhibitions include: He Wahine, He Aute, 2024, Unitec; Ngā Mata Aute, 2025, Grace Aotearoa; Hine Whakamauāhua, 2025, Laree Payne; Whakamau, 2026, Grace Aotearoa; Te Manawa, Te Manawa Aotearoa Art Fair, 2026; Te Manawa Kia whakatā, 2026, Webbs; Vanilla, 2026, CAPTION, Seoul. As a Artist and aute maker, central to her practice is onamata and anamata as a methodology that centres the concept of non-linear time, encompassing connections between people and trees, and fostering a sense of reciprocity and balance.
