We are thrilled to invite you to the dedication of our Community Art Project for 2025, "From These Roots"!
Each year, as part of our mission and as part of our North Texas Giving Day fundraising campaign, The Art Room creates a Community Art Project that is donated to a local nonprofit. Designed and built hand-in-hand with the community, these projects beautify shared spaces, lift up voices, and celebrate what it means to belong and connect.
This year, our project honors the American Legion Hall Senior Center in Southeast Denton—a vital space in a neighborhood that is both deeply important on its own and an invaluable part of the larger Denton community. Over 200 community members of all ages came together to create three beautiful installations. "From These Roots" is our love letter to Denton—celebrating the wisdom of our seniors, the service of Veterans, and the resilience of the Black community.
Join us for live music, refreshments, and—most importantly—the unveiling of our three community-created artworks:
- A 5’ x 10’ painting made of 72 community-painted panels honoring the original 1957 American Legion Post #840
- A mosaic bench and planters with 600+ handmade tiles featuring the Sankofa Bird and portraits of the Center’s founders
- A Sankofa Bird quilt, featuring a central appliqué by renowned fiber artist Barbara McCraw and blocks sewn by local quilters and community members, symbolizing the wisdom of learning from the past
Together, these works celebrate heritage, resilience, and the deep bonds that connect generations.
We couldn't be prouder of the volunteers and artists who gave their time and talent to bring this vision to life. It's been a real privilege to work alongside the American Legion Hall Senior Center and to celebrate a place that continues to be a cornerstone of connection and belonging in Southeast Denton.
