Rengstorff House is Mountain View's oldest home (c. 1867) and since its restoration in 1991 has been serving in part as a local history museum nestled in the scenic Shoreline at Mountain View wildlife and recreation area.
Rengstorff House was built for Henry Rengstoff and his family. Henry, a poor German migrant arrived in SF at the age of 21 during the Gold Rush era and though he never panned for gold, he became a wealthy ranch owner and an influential figure in the socio-economic development in the area. Henry was a founder of a port of trade (a landing and a warehouse) and helped found the first school in the North Bayshore area.
The house and the resident Rengstorff family also have links to artists Perry Askam, a successful light opera performer, and Dave Brubeck, the famed Jazz pianist. See the virtual tour for a 3D view of the museum collection and historical interpretation provided by the volunteer-run group, Friends of "R" House.
