Deconstructing Doomsday Capitalism | A Thyrd Period Boozy Lecutre
About this Event
The world feels like it's ending. But who gets a lifeboat?
From climate catastrophe to rising authoritarianism, it's hard to scroll through the news without feeling like we're living through one crisis after another. And as the world grows more uncertain, a familiar question keeps resurfacing: Who gets protected, and who gets left behind?
Turns out, that question has a history.
Join thyrd space for another round of Thyrd Period, our boozy lecture series where we grab a drink, get a little academic, and ask some big questions.
This time, we're joined by historian and PhD candidate Virgil Clark to explore the rise of capitalism, the development of modern ideas about race and national belonging, and the politics of deciding whose lives are worth protecting in times of crisis.
Drawing on the idea of armed lifeboat politics, we'll trace how these systems took shape, how they continue to influence our present, and what understanding their history might tell us about building a different future.
Come curious. Leave with more questions.
