Caribbean traditions.
About this Event
This program brings together three dance artists—Awilda Rodriguez-Lora,
Priscilla Marrero, and Megan Curet—to discuss works rooted in
Caribbean traditions. Through their work, they challenge how
Western dance training has colonized the pelvis and gendered dance,
reclaiming movement grounded in Afro-Caribbean forms like Bomba,
Bamboula, and Orisha dance as sites of resistance and ancestral
knowledge. They explore cultural intersections and colonial
histories, revealing how artists reclaim their bodies through dance. They both honor ancestral traditions while transforming the pelvis into a site of
resistance, power, and embodied knowledge through hybrid or shared
movement vocabularies, histories and research.
