About this Event

We are delighted to invite you to this book launch event at the University of Edinburgh, exploring and celebrating the new book "Decolonisation and Legal Knowledge: Reflections on Power and Possibility" by Professor Folúkẹ́ Adébísí. Professor Adébísí will give a talk on the book (Bristol University Press, 2023) and the event will explore its interdisciplinary dimensions and critical implications, including for thinking about decolonisation, law, legal education, racial justice, development and social change. The event will take place Wednesday January 18, 4:00pm-5:30pm, followed by a reception.

The venue is Hugh Robson Building Lecture Theatre (G.04), George Square, University of Edinburgh. It is co-sponsored by the Centre of African Studies (CAS) in conjunction with the Centre for Ethics and Critical Thought (CRITIQUE), Edinburgh Law School, Race.ED, and the Race and Inclusivity in Global Education Network (RIGEN).

Everyone is welcome. The event is open to the public.

About the book: The law is heavily implicated in creating, maintaining, and reproducing racialised hierarchies which bring about and preserve acute global disparities and injustices. This essential book provides an examination of the meanings of decolonisation and explores how this examination can inform teaching, researching, and practising of law. It explores the ways in which the foundations of law are entangled in colonial thought and in its (re)production of ideas of commodification of bodies and space-time. Thus, it is an exploration of the ways in which we can use theories and praxes of decolonisation to produce legal knowledge for flourishing futures.

About the speaker: Professor Adébísí is an Associate Professor at the University of Bristol Law School, whose scholarship focuses on decolonial thought in legal education and its intersection with a history of changing ideas of the 'human.'

Discussants:

  • Dr. Michelle Burgis-Kasthala, Edinburgh Law School
  • Dr. George Karekwaivanane, Centre of African Studies
  • Dr. Omolabake Fakunle, Moray House School of Education

Please RSVP using this form so we can keep track of estimated numbers of people for the event.
