Lecture Overview

Why do we so often struggle to make “good” choices, and how can we do better?

This lecture explores these questions by examining how the physical architecture of the brain places limits on our ability to make accurate choices. We’ll look at the mental adaptations that help us overcome some of these physical limitations, and what they can teach us about why our decision-making sometimes succeeds and sometimes falls short.

Along the way, we’ll consider what the science of decision-making means for some surprisingly big parts of everyday life: self-control, productivity, and our ability to make better choices.

And finally, we’ll tackle an even bigger question: if the physical structure of our brains places limits on the choices we make, what might that mean for free will?

Themes: Decision-Making · Neuroscience · Self-Control · Free Will
