Debris of Battle
For three in days July 1863, two great armies waged combat in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Some 160,000 men and 70,000 animals occupied an area normally inhabited by 3,000 people. The town’s supplies were taken or destroy by the armies. In the aftermath of the fighting, houses were used as hospitals, and fields were trampled and used as cemeteries. It would take years for the local population to recover from the devasting effects of war. But soon another economic opportunity surfaced. Visitors were flocking to the town in great numbers. They needed to be housed and feed, and there was a great need for livery stables to supply carriages, drivers, and guides to take them around the field. Children scoured the fields for bullets, artillery shells accouterments; debris of battle that could be converted into souvenirs. And with the establishment of the Soldiers' National Cemetery and the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association, the town’s place of one of the greatest tourist attractions in the country was solidified. Join historian Timothy H. Smith as we discuss this transformation of Gettysburg post battle economy.
