Witchcraft, Magic and Christianity: A Historical Debate from the Holy Inquisition to the Christian Witches of Tik Tok
The relationship between witchcraft, magic, and Christianity has been a subject of both fascination and conflict for centuries, shaped by historical tensions, evolving beliefs, and contemporary reinterpretations. From the demonisation of magical practices at the close of the Middle Ages, through the early modern persecution of alleged witches, to the emergence of self-identified Christian witches on platforms such as TikTok, the ongoing debate over magic and Christianity underscores the enduring tension between institutionalised religions and personal spiritual expression.
This lecture seeks to examine the key factors that defined the concept of witchcraft as understood by both religious authorities and the general populace from the late medieval period to the decline of the witch hunts. In doing so, it will offer a cultural framework to contextualise the current phenomenon of Christian witches and the concept of Christo-Paganism, and explore how these contemporary trends compare to historical perceptions of witchcraft within a Christian context.
