Death Cafe @ Martha and Mary's

Come along at the end of October, in the season of ancestor festivals such as Hallowe’en, Samhain, Dia de los Muertes and All Souls’ Day, for Martha and Mary's (and possibly Heaton’s) first ever Death Cafe!

Imagine a world in which we all felt comfortable talking about death - where we could move beyond fear to co-create visions of our best-case scenarios, talk more easily to our loved ones about their wishes, or acknowledge the complex ways in which our contact with death has changed us. At its heart, the finite nature of life gives it meaning... and we are here for talking more about that.

Death Cafe is an international movement to bring people together to drink tea, eat cake and chat about death and dying with no fixed agenda. It aims to create places where discussions about our hopes, thoughts, fears, wishes, ideas and experiences in connection to these topics can be normalised.

Join End of Life doula Beth Coverdale and paramedic Jenny Pattinson for an informal, open, welcoming conversation about any and all aspects of this most human and universal of things. Beth and Jenny are passionate about challenging taboos around these topics, and will 'hold' the space to help everyone take part, but there are no experts here - after all we will all die, and everyone has some experience of death.

Please note:

• Death Cafes do not offer grief support, therapy or counselling, and are not intended to be places to help you process the more challenging aspects of death, grief and bereavement. If you are having difficulties in your grief, please instead contact Beth at [email protected] or 07474228176 so that we can offer other options and signpost to avenues of further support.

• The cafe counter will be open as usual, and you are warmly invited to support Martha and Mary's by purchasing something from their lovely range of hot drinks and cakes/food menu. Other customers will also be in the space (although we will have our own dedicated area - the back room) so we'll be mindful of this while we chat.
