St. Vincent Regional Hospital Partners with Billings Public Schools to Bring Film Screening and Dialogue to Address Trauma, Safety and Prevention
Community members are invited to attend a special screening of the acclaimed short documentary Death by Numbers on Saturday, April 25, from 3–5 p.m. at the Lincoln Center Auditorium in Billings, followed by a live Q&A and a moderated community discussion with local leaders from education, law enforcement, and healthcare.
Death by Numbers offers a powerful, personal look at school shooting survivor Sam Fuentes’ journey toward healing through storytelling and reflection. The film explores the lasting impact of violence while emphasizing resilience, accountability, and the importance of open dialogue.
This free community event was brought forward by the St. Vincent Regional Hospital trauma team as part of its role with the National Trauma Survivors Network, reflecting a commitment to supporting survivors, fostering community dialogue, and strengthening prevention and response efforts through collaboration.
“This event is about creating space for thoughtful conversation – not fear – and bringing together different parts of our community around shared responsibility for safety and well‑being, and speaking up if you have concerns – the see something, say something philosophy,” Dr. Barry McKenzie, St. Vincent Regional Hospital Trauma Medical Director. “By listening, learning, and engaging across sectors, we can better support students, families, and the broader community.”
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an in-person Q&A with Fuentes, who will share her experience as a survivor, processing trauma, and reclaiming one’s voice.
The event will conclude with a facilitated community conversation featuring representatives from local schools, law enforcement, and healthcare organizations. The discussion will focus on how community partnerships can support safety and prevention, and how adults and students can work together to strengthen communication and trust.
"As part of our partnership with Intermountain Health, we are honored to participate in the upcoming screening of the documentary Death by Numbers,” shared Dr. Erwin Garcia, superintendent of Billings Public Schools. “The film explores the critical themes of trauma recovery, community resilience, and the healing journey. We look forward to engaging with the community in this important conversation."
The screening is recommended for high school students and adults. Due to the subject matter, the film addresses themes of trauma and violence. Support resources will be available at the event.
