ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Dr. Deepa Soni is a board-certified neurosurgeon, currently practicing in the greater Boston-area. She obtained her Doctorate of Medicine from Howard University College of Medicine and completed her Neurosurgery training at Brigham & Women's Hospital (BHW)/Children’s Hospital (BCH)/Harvard Medical School (HMS), followed by a cerebrovascular/skull base fellowship in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Soni is the 1st woman of color and the 2nd female overall to complete the BWH/BCH/HMS Neurosurgery Residency, in its entirety, in the more than 100-year history of the training program.

Over the past 15 years, Dr. Soni has had the opportunity to work in a diverse array of practice settings, ranging from serving as academic faculty in the US to working internationally, in an underserved area in Dunedin, New Zealand. Dr. Soni also obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, in clinical effectiveness, in 2005, from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She continues to remain active with the School of Public Health and is currently the Vice-President of the Harvard Alumni Council and is serving in her second term as the President of the Harvard Chan Boston Alumni Chapter. Moreover, Dr. Soni has long advocated that a strong leadership is a necessary foundation to effect meaningful change, and thus she was honored to be one of a unique cohort of 130 international surgeons, as part of the inaugural class, to complete the prestigious Harvard Medical School Surgical Leadership Program, in 2019.

Dr. Soni also has had a lifelong interest in and commitment to issues regarding fairness and equity in professional settings, particularly those related to gender equality. As a result, partaking in activities dedicated to increasing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) have been a priority for her, including her past service as Co-Chair of the Harvard Chan’s Dean’s Advisory Council on Diversity & Inclusion (DACDI) and the alumni Professional Development Committee, as well as her current roles as a Member of the DEI Committee at the USS Constitution Museum, in Charlestown, MA and as a member of the Alumni Network of Harvard Women (ANHW) – Boston Chapter.
