It's regular trivia held at your local bar. The twist? It's held entirely in American Sign Language (ASL)! To respect Deaf culture, we ask that everyone do their best to use ASL - no matter your skill level. So no speaking allowed! ?
??"Is it trivia about Deaf culture or sign language?"
Nope! While we do include a few questions throughout the game relating to Deaf culture, this is just your average general trivia. What's the capital of Peru? Who is the host of Wheel of Fortune? If you know this sort of random trivia (or even if you don't), these are the events for you! ?
??"Do I have to be fluent in sign language in order to participate?"
Absolutely not! MSC's goal is to make bar trivia inclusive for everyone who loves trivia as much as we do. If you don't know ASL, no worries! Thanks to UW-Milwaukee's Interpreter Training Program, we have exceptional student interpreters at all of our events. We also have a PowerPoint with the questions/answers and other info about the game.
?? "Wait, so I don't know ASL...but I'm not allowed to speak. How am I supposed to communicate with anyone?"
Even if you know some ASL, understanding other people can be a challenge. We provide notebook paper for writing back and forth if signing isn’t an option! You can also use this strategy if you want to keep your team discussions a little more private from the neighboring tables ?
We completely understand the anxiety of being in a room filled with people who use a different language than you. It can be stressful and discourages some from attending. We want to make everyone as comfortable as we can. We enforce a 5-person team maximum to keep things fair but mainly to encourage meeting new people!
If you have any questions or concerns, our volunteers, hosts, and interpreters will do what they can to make sure EVERYONE has a fun time! The only thing you have to be in order to participate is a trivia lover. ? We look forward to seeing you all soon at Company Brewing!
