About this Event

As part of this year's Dia de Los Muertos (Day of The Dead) celebrations we have a jam packed afternoon of fun traditional crafts and films.

We have teamed up with Vanessa (Vane) Fernández who is a Mexican-Peruvian Angeleno archivist, educator and community radio programmer based in East London. She lived in Mexico City after graduating from UC Santa Barbara and interned at the national film archive, La Cineteca Nacional, supporting the film conservation department.
Before moving to London, she supported community programmes at the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory, The Autry Museum, and KCSB.FM among others in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Vanessa is a dedicated and passionate cultural programmer with an appreciation for collective storytelling and community preservation by means of DIY archival work, community radio and diverse film and media programming.

Short Film - 'Day of The Dead'

'Day of the Dead’ is a short film made in 1957 by Charles and Ray Eames who are best known for their modern industrial design fame. They collaborated with the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico to bring an educational film about the illustrious and long-lasting traditions of honouring loved ones in Mexico and the US.

Mexican Crafts - 'Papel Picado' Workshop

‘Papel Picado’ loosely translates to ‘perforated paper’, which is a centuries long tradition in Mexico and Mexican diasporic communities around the world. It is crafted ceremonial paper art that adorns altars (ofrendas) that honour our loved ones on Día de Los Muertos. ‘Papel picado’ can be made by using colourful tissue paper and scissors to cut out symmetrical designs or themes that include birds, floral designs, and skeletons. The workshop will be lead by the amazing @valesalevane

Screening - Disney's 'Coco'

Despite his family's generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Héctor, the two new friends embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

Please note 'Coco' is rated as a PG.
