Books are written about the history of Rotterdam music. But is there music in the future of the port city? Stadion Feyenoord N.V. will disappear from the stage as a stage in any case. In order to keep this legendary place – Genesis, Tina Turner and Voicst have performed there – alive in the hearts and minds of people, a new music series will start in WORM in November called ‘De Kuip’.
‘De Kuip’ does not think in boxes, but because “music” is unfortunately too broad, below follows a description as thorough as possible of the two acts that will play on the first evening, Sunday evening 16 November.
The main course on the menu is the American band Tyvek. This quintet from Detroit, Michigan, has been around for over fifteen years and has released records on quality labels such as Siltbreeze, Fag Tapes and In The Red. Well, then you know where to look: adventurous guitar music that flirts with garage, (post)punk and even melody. The band also has a single out on Sub Pop, the label that also has work for Total Control, The Homesick and John Waters, so that doesn’t really mean anything. This is their first European tour in years and ‘De Kuip’ is happy to welcome them to Rotterdam.
Are you ready for dessert? Then you’ll have to wait a little longer. The main course this evening consists of two dishes. The second is the music of Brussels’ Soetkin Elbers. This classically trained soprano uses electronics in addition to her voice to create an alienating but exciting show. The performance that Elbers recently gave as the opening act for Bill Nace, at an Ultra Eczema evening in Antwerp, showed that her sounds go well with other music.
