Gneiss (pronounced “nice”) is a type of high grade metamorphic rock formed through high pressure and heat. These well-foliated and sheared rocks are some of the oldest rock types on the planet. As I first listened to the Gneiss recordings, I imagined a smoldering pool of granite and sedimentary rock swirling beneath the earth, eventually cooling and twisting with crystalline granules emerging from the earthen muck. I think “Gneiss” is a great name for this quartet! In this scenario we have four distinct minerals (trumpet, haegeum, guitar, and bass) in post-high heat cooling phase. The distinct voices can be heard bubbling and twisting along as they reach for their final solid form, with each composition (or improvisation) having a unique blend and destined shape. In a world of hyper-produced grid-based music, I’m a sucker for music that is inspired by the natural world. I encourage you to stare at some rocks whilst listening, or maybe even grab a few and bang/scrape along to become a part of the beautifully textured crystalized sludge."
