De-colonizing Identity: Rematriating Global Understandings of Gender

Racism is synonymous with the history of the gender binary. Join Chels Morgan, MFA, CSE as they examine the racist history of the gender binary and deconstruct the narratives that colonization has imposed on us. Then, follow them across the globe as they highlight some expansive, indigenous global majority ways of being and some methods for making space for these identities in our theatrical communities.

Course Objectives:

• Explore methods of defining gender and identity outside of the context imposed on us by colonization.
• Examine the racialized history of the gender binary and it’s role in our collective oppression.
• Ignite curiosity around the concept of gender as it relates to how we view ourselves, our communities and our work.
