This cleanup will be over the steep guard rail along Pine Run Road just off SR 309 where the PA DCNR Crystal Lake Tract Trailhead within the Pinchot State Forest. Parking is located immediately off the highway and to your left. Volunteers will need to talk up the road for short distance and cross it and head down the Utility Right of Way towards Pine Run. No vehicles other than 2 Side by Sides provided by the Luzerne Conservation District and EPCAMR will be utilized along the Pole Line to prevent any erosion of the existing dirt road to haul trash and tires to the upper staging area along Pine Run Road across from 135 Pine Run Road along the shoulder where a dumpster will be placed.
There are a number of tires that are several hundred yards upstream along Pine Run and at the toe of the very steep hillside along Pine Run Road that was illegally discarded and dumped. We were notified by the Georgetown Conservation Club and investigated the area last Fall and coordinated with PA DCNR and the Utility Company to access the right of way to recieve approvals to conduct and coordinate the cleanup effort.
Pine Run is a tributary of Solomon Creek in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It is approximately 3.5 miles long and flows through Bear Creek Township, Laurel Run, and Hanover Township. The watershed of the creek has an area of 5.00 square miles. The creek is designated as a Coldwater Fishery and a Migratory Fishery and its watershed is inhabited by several species of macroinvertebrates and fish, including trout. A reservoir known as the Pine Run Reservoir is situated on the creek. It is dammed by the Pine Run Dam Number 1 downstream and under State Route 309.
