DC Writers' Salon Writing Lab: Bringing Your Story’s Setting to Life
About this Event
Every story has a setting—but what makes your setting distinctive? How can you invite readers to step inside your story, experience it through your characters’ eyes, and see, hear, and feel the world you’ve created?
Join this member-led writers’ lab to examine your story’s setting from new perspectives and explore how setting can deepen your characters, atmosphere, and narrative.
In this interactive workshop, you’ll:
- Identify the details and qualities that make your story setting unique
- Explore how different characters experience and interpret the same setting
- Receive feedback from fellow writers as you strengthen and refine your story setting
This workshop is led by DC Writers' Salon member, Marc Shapiro. Marc spent time teaching English in a small town near Madrid, which forms the basis of his autobiographical novel in progress. He also hosts the Literary DC podcast, where he chats with local writers.

Based in Dupont, the DC Writers' Salon is a studio and community for writers. The Salon helps us make space and time for what we love to do: write. But more than that, it invites us to engage with the otherwise solo, and sometimes grueling, process of writing in a way that's more connected and accountable. Learn more at DCWritersSalon.com.
