DC Stands With Ukraine: Protest Ovechkin at the Capitals Home Opener

Join us outside Capital One Arena for a protest at the Washington Capitals home opener. Alexander Ovechkin is expected to play.
- Wednesday, October 7
- 5:45 - 7:45 pm
- Capital One Arena, Washington, DC
Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin recently appeared in a political campaign video supporting Putin’s United Russia party. In this video, he appeared publicly onstage alongside Maria Lvova-Belova, Putin’s Commissioner for Children's Rights.
Putin and Lvova-Belova are both wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes involving the abduction of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children.
Russia's war against Ukraine has involved the mass killing of civilians, systematic torture and rape, and the mass trafficking of Ukrainian children. Ovechkin chose to publicly stand with and campaign for the political forces responsible for these atrocities.
As members of the DC community, we find it appalling that the captain of our city's hockey team would use his fame to publicly support Putin’s political party and endorse Russia's atrocities.
Opening Night is one of the highest-profile events of the season nationally televised, with special pre-game coverage and a major sponsor presence.
We'll be there to send a clear message to Ovechkin, the Capitals, their sponsors, and the venue: support for mass murderers has consequences.
