Detroit Book City is ecstatic to host its 10th Annual African-American Family Book Expo & Read-in 2026 to promote, preserve and sustain literacy in Metro Detroit while celebrating the heritage of Black History. The book expo will be held on Sat. Feb. 21, 2026 from 12 Noon - 5pm at Developing K.I.D.S. - Village Hall state-of-the-art facility, 24230 W. McNichols, Detroit 48219. FREE ADMISSION with registered ticket!

Get ready to meet & buy autographed books from over 40 talented independent authors of adult & children books from across all genres! Fill your bookshelves up with incredible stories and knowledge written through the lens of local and national Black Americans. We encourage you to bring your kids to share this experience so that they can 'gain a love' of reading at an early age and retain the books collected to share with future generations to come.

Did we mention KIDZONE? Bring the kids because we're giving away free Black History silicone wristbands, 'I Pledge to Read' posters and lots of heritage coloring sheets. At 2pm, the kids meet Brody in-person! Enjoy selfies & entertainment with our FUN mascot bookdog! Be there...leave with an event SWAG Bag full of literacy resources!

With respect to ANY post Covid-19 & variants, please be prepared to practice the latest CDC's guidelines to protect all including mask and hand sanitizer. This event is handicap accessible.

National African-American Read-In hosted event! This is our third year on the national registry in collaboration with the National Council of Teachers of English. This initiative is a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering A-A books and authors. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English and has reached more than 6 million participants around the world. Read your story, poem or song written by a legendary African-American writer from the past that focuses on the Black experience. This is a public reading created to amplify Black literature, culture, experiences, history and comprehension. Programming starts at 1pm.

Detroit Book City hosts the largest Black author book fairs in Michigan. We have been featured in the Oakland Press and Telegram Newspapers, Channel 7 - Detroit WXYZ, WDIV – Live in the D with Michelle Oliver, American Black Journal/PBS with Stephen Henderson , Fox 2 News with Kelly Rowe, CW-50 Community Connect with Logan R. Tesmer, and we're honorably listed on The OPRAH List ~125 Black-Owned Bookstores in America along with Travel Noire's 50 in 50: Black-owned Bookstores Across America.

On June 2, 2023, Detroit Book City was honored in a special ceremony along with a self-portrait on the 'wall of fame' at the Detroit Historical Museum by The Soul Of Philanthropy (TSOP). Over 90 Black leaders in Metro Detroit were highlighted for Black giving in the city. The philanthropy exhibit is open to the public for viewing at the Detroit Historical Museum from June 3 - August 27, 2023. Be sure to stop by to support and visit https://www.tsopmichigan.org.
