Dayramir González began his professional career at 16 with former Irakere member Oscar Valdes’ ensemble Diákara, winning Havana’s JoJazz festival in 2004 and 2005. The Cuban pianist has since performed at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Since those early victories, González has become a leading voice in contemporary Afro-Cuban jazz. He earned three Cubadisco awards for his 2007 debut album Dayramir & Habana enTRANCé and made history as Berklee College of Music’s first Cuban national Presidential Scholarship recipient. His journey from Havana native to New York artist represents the continuing evolution of Afro-Cuban music, performing in 15,000-seat stadiums with legends like Chucho and Bebo Valdes while bringing the tradition to new audiences.
Celebrating 25 years as a professional musician, González’s latest album V.I.D.A. (Verdad, Independencia, Diversidad & Amor) explores the intersection of Cuban tradition and modern jazz. Dedicated to Yoruba deity Oshun and inspired by the Cuban band Síntesis, the 2025 release celebrates Cuban identity through vibrant rhythms and spiritual heritage. His performance credits include SXSW, artist residencies at Joe’s Pub NYC and major venues throughout the Americas, establishing him as an international composer, orchestrator and pianist making his mark on jazz’s future.
Dayramir González Quartet is also performing at the SJZ Break Room Stage at 4pm.
