The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2024 by presenting "Red Reminds Me…," a program of seven videos reflecting the emotional spectrum of living with HIV today. Join us before the screening for historian presentations, and stick around for a post-screening community conversation!
Day With(out) Art has been observed annually since 1989, coinciding with World AIDS Day on December 1. On this day, art museums and galleries worldwide close their doors, turn off their lights, or shroud artworks to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and safer sex. This International Day of Action and mourning responds to the AIDS crisis, honors individual legacies, commemorates personal losses, and strives to increase awareness and action in the fight against the global AIDS epidemic.
This year, in observance of Day With(out) Art, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts is covering John D. McLaughlin’s #21-1958. Think about the significance of shrouding an artwork on view and take some time to engage with the other works in the Modern and Contemporary gallery. Starting October 21 “Untitled” (LA) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, will be on view. This installation is part of a series initially conceived as a memorial to the artist’s partner, Ross Laycock, who died due to AIDS-related complications in 1991. A special self-guide will be available the week leading up to December 1.
