About this Event
Japanese culture and Japanese stories have long interested creative people elsewhere in the world, from Puccini and Gilbert & Sullivan to contemporary filmmakers.
The main screening of this event will be Wim Wenders’ highly praised (Germany-Japan 2023). Wenders tells the story of Hirayama (Kōji Yakusho) a middle-aged man who has opted for a quiet life of music, trees and a daily job of cleaning public toilets that are part of a Project in Tokyo, with toilets designed by international artists.
This film is partly inspired by the aesthetics of Ozu Yasujirō and we’ll look at other filmmakers who have been similarly inspired by Ozu as well as others who find different kinds of ‘Japaneseness’.
Tea and coffee will be available for a small fee and you are welcome to bring your own lunch.
Tickets are available online and on the door but due to limited places, please let us know if you are planning to buy your ticket on the day.
