Day of the Dead - Family Day at Oodi Library

Welcome to Día de Muertos - Family Day at Oodi Library! A day for the whole family to honor the Day of the Dead with lots of activities for children and their families.

All activities have free access | Age recommended: All ages.

Explore this Mexican and Central-American tradition recognized by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland in 2023 as Intangible Cultural Heritage and part of UNESCO's intangible world heritage since 2003.

During this ancestral festivity typically celebrated between November 1st and 2nd families set up spectacular Altars in memory of their loved ones who have passed away. It’s a special day to honor them while surrounded by family and friends.

And remember you can come with your Catrina dress or your traditional make-up ready!

Storytelling sessions: We’ll learn more about the Day of the Dead through beautiful stories in Spanish Finnish and Swedish:

2-3 pm: Storytelling in Swedish by Elina Sange.

3-4 pm: Storytelling in Finnish by Taru Adler.

4-5 pm: Storytelling in Spanish by Alicia Sevilla.

Age suggested: +3 with an adult. | Children's section | Window’s carpet area.

Video installation ’Camino a casa’ created by Nite Labs Ltd team. Mexican visual artists Nancy Sosa (MX) and Pablo Mercado (MX) will light the way with their video creation so our loved ones can come back home.

DIY Forest Altar kit | Arts & Craft Nonstop Workshop to create your own mini altar DIY (Do It Yourself) with your children.

 2 pm – 4 pm. | Age suggested: +2 with an adult. | Upstairs Children's section.

In the Forest - Communitarian installation: Let‘s come together to remember our family members friends pets... who are no longer with us in this collective offering that will decorate the tress area with beautiful flowers and the names of our loved ones.

 2 pm – 6 pm. | Age suggested: +2 with an adult. | Children's section – Trees area.

 ‘A bestiary from Mexico’ | Classic Guitar concert by Alan Guerra (MX).

 5 - 6 pm.

 Age suggested: although all ages are welcome this is a classic guitar concert music. At parents’ discretion.
