About this Event

Join acclaimed crime fiction writer David Peace (Tokyo Trilogy) and author historian Paul French (City of Devils: A Shanghai Noir) as they converse about their craft, their inspirations and their passion for creating fiction from real-life events.

Is it possible to better know our cities through their criminal underbellies, even to profitably examine the dark side of human nature? Unmissable for fans of noir and crime fiction!

David Peace was born in Yorkshire, England, and now lives in Tokyo, Japan. He was named as one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists in 2003, and is the author of eleven novels, including the Red Riding Quartet, adapted for television by Channel 4, GB84, which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, The Damned Utd, which was made into a film starring Michael Sheen, and Red or Dead, which was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize. Tokyo Redux is his most recent novel and completes his Tokyo Trilogy.

Born in London Paul French lived and worked in Shanghai for many years. His book Midnight in Peking was a New York Times Bestseller. His most recent book City of Devils: A Shanghai Noir has received much praise with The Economist writing, ‘…in Mr French the city has its champion storyteller.’ Both Midnight in Peking and City of Devils are currently being developed as movies. He is a regular contributor of long-reads to the South China Morning Post weekend magazine and broadcasts often on RTHK3. He is currently working on a biography of the inspirational year (1924/1925) Wallis Warfield Spencer, later the Duchess of Windsor, spent in China for publication in 2024.
