Dave Koz has spent more than three decades doing something deceptively simple: making a saxophone sound like a conversation. Along the way he has collected multiple Grammy nominations, eleven No. 1 albums on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a 2023 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a platinum-selling artist, a radio host, and a longtime humanitarian — but above all, he is a live performer who treats a concert as something the audience helps build.
This January he brings that show to South Africa for two nights, and to Kirstenbosch for the first of them.
Joining him as special guest is Chris Walker — bassist, vocalist and producer, and for more than twenty years Al Jarreau's musical director, bassist and co-vocalist until Jarreau's passing in 2017. A Houston native who started out in his family's gospel group, Walker studied at the New School and played with Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Bob James and Cassandra Wilson before becoming musical director for Regina Belle. His own records have produced Top 5 R&B singles, and South Africa has been among his most devoted audiences for years.
Behind them, a band that has been together long enough to read each other's minds: Randy Jacobs on guitar and as musical director (Was Not Was, The Boneshakers, sessions with B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt and Seal), Nathaniel Kearney Jr. on bass, Carnell Harrell on keys (Chaka Khan, The Jacksons, Jonathan Butler, Boney James) and Jay Williams on drums (Yolanda Adams, Will Downing, Kirk Whalum, Ledisi).
