Dimitiriou's Jazz Alley welcome bassist, composer and jazz icon Dave Holland featuring Kevin Eubanks (guitar) and Eric Harland (drums) for one night only! Show time - 7:30pm. Doors open at 6:00pm.
Dave Holland is a bassist, composer, bandleader whose passion for musical expression of all styles, and dedication to creating consistently innovative music ensembles have propelled a professional career of more than 50 years, and earned him top honors in his field including multiple Grammy awards and the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2017. From the electric whirlwind of Miles Davis’ electric band to the pioneering avant-garde quartet Circle to his own acclaimed big band, Holland has been at the forefront of jazz in many of its forms since his earliest days. He has never stopped evolving, reinventing his concept and approach with each new project while constantly honing his instantly identifiable voice. The Boston Globe praises Holland as “a master bassist and bandleader, one of the most sophisticated composers and arrangers in the jazz world.”
“The commander-in-chief of a first rate, cutting edge group has to be everything: creative genius and effective entrepreneur, power player and diplomat, steeped in experience but fresh and unjaded… Few current leaders exemplify the role as well as bassist Dave Holland” - DownBeat
Kevin Eubanks, guitarist and prolific composer. He is well known by many as the former Music Director of The Tonight Show band, appearing on the show 18 years (1992 - 2010). His laid back style and affability seems to belie the concentration and focus that have made him successful both as a consummate musician and a household name for late-night TV viewers.
Kevin was born into a musical household in Philadelphia, PA. His mother, Vera Eubanks, is a gospel and classical pianist and organist with a Masters Degree in music education. Kevin was thus exposed to world-class music in his formative years as he began violin lessons, his first instrument, at age seven. Kevin also studied the trumpet before making his commitment to the guitar which was solidified with his entrance to the world renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston from which he has received an ‘Honorary Doctorate’ degree. He has also received an ‘Honorary Doctorate’ degree from Redlands University in California.
Kevin moved to New York after attending Berklee College of Music where his career kicked off in earnest. He started playing with some of the greats of Jazz, including Art Blakey, Slide Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, Roy Haynes, Dave Holland, Ron Carter and others. In addition to working in other bands, Kevin become the leader of his own group and traveled to Jordan, Pakistan, India and Kuwait on tours sponsored by the US State Department, not to mention the European/Japanese Jazz circuit which so many artists frequent.
In 1992, Kevin moved to the West Coast to join The Tonight Show Band featuring Jay Leno. In 1995, Kevin was asked the lead the band. His versatility and open-minded approach enabled him to write and choose music that satisfied the huge and varied audience for the show. In addition to his own Billbaord chart-topping albums, Kevin has become involved in writing scores for both TV movies and full-length independent feature films.
Multi-Grammy nominated drummer Eric Harland is the most in-demand drummer of his generation. He has already been on close to 200 recordings by the age of 36. Eric has been recognized in the Boston Globe, New York Times, JazzTimes, Modern Drummer, All About Jazz, The New Yorker, DownBeat, L’uomo Vogue, and other prominent publications. It has been his privilege to share the stage with masters such as Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, Terence Blanchard, Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Savion Glover, and many others, as well as today’s emerging artists like Esperanza Spalding, Jane Monheit, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, and Stacie Orrico. He currently performs with James Farm (with Joshua Redman), PRISM (with Dave Holland and Kevin Eubanks), Sangam (with Charles Lloyd and Zakir Hussain, and Voyager, Eric’s own widely-recognized group. He has also collaborated with artists as diverse in style as Les Claypool, Primus, Dispatch, and John Mayer. Voyager recently released their newest album Vipassana to critical acclaim.
