Dave Chappelle is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and social commentator, widely recognized for his satirical sketch series Chappelle's Show and numerous stand-up specials. He has received many accolades, including six Emmy Awards and six Grammy Awards, as well as the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019. 

Early Life and Career

Born in Washington, D.C. on August 24, 1973, Chappelle's parents were both university professors. He studied theater arts at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and graduated in 1991. After moving to New York City, he began his comedy career and gained recognition on HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam in 1992. His early film appearances included roles in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) and The Nutty Professor (1996). He also co-wrote and starred in the film Half Baked (1998). 

Chappelle's Show and Hiatus

Chappelle's sketch comedy series, Chappelle's Show, premiered on Comedy Central in 2003 and became highly popular for its social and racial humor. However, he left the show during the third season in 2005 due to burnout and a difficult work environment, reportedly walking away from a $50 million contract. After a break, he returned to stand-up comedy touring in 2013. 

Career Comeback and Netflix Specials

Chappelle's comeback included hosting Saturday Night Live in 2016, which earned him an Emmy Award. In 2017, he began a deal with Netflix and has released several specials since, such as The Age of Spin, Equanimity, Sticks & Stones, The Closer, and The Dreamer. While successful, some of these specials have generated controversy and criticism for jokes about the LGBTQ+ community. 

Personal Life and Residence

Chappelle converted to Islam in 1991. He is married to Elaine Erfe, and they have three children. They reside on a farm near Yellow Springs, Ohio, where Chappelle is involved in the local community.
