What are we doing here? When Tinder launched, there was a lot of excitement that it could open up dating and casual sex in ways straight people had never really experienced before. But after years of swiping, ghosting, and bad first dates, a lot of us have come to the same conclusion: dating apps kind of suck. So why does Grindr seem to work so differently?
Using research, personal experience, and plenty of internet chaos, we’ll explore why these apps have evolved into completely different social spaces. We’ll unpack sexual scripting (the unwritten rules society has for each gender), how safety and social expectations shape online dating, and why the behaviour of a few can influence an entire dating culture.
Expect memes, anonymous screenshots, lots of laughs, and a few uncomfortable truths. By the end of the night, you’ll probably never look at dating apps the same way again and maybe we’ll even imagine what a better dating culture could look like.
Shireen Noble is a PhD student at the University of Toronto and has been involved in sex education and research for the past 15+ years. She did her master’s thesis in public health education on how women use dating apps to connect with sexual partners. She stays on the forefront of emerging issues in sex research and education, especially as they relate to technology.
