Mapping Public Opinion Without Polling Everyone: A Hands-On Introduction to Multilevel Regression and Poststratification (MRP) and Visualizing the Data

Learn how to estimate public opinion on a neighborhood level from a single countywide survey.

• Discuss why poll results break down at small geographies
• Learn the ideas and goals behind MRP
• Build an MRP model from scratch using a synthetic poll about transit support in Cleveland
• Generate neighborhood estimates using ACS data
• Visualize the data and uncertainty along the way

Attendees are expected to:

• bring a computer with RStudio installed.
• expected to be competent or familiar with fundamentals of R and basic statistics.

Aleszu Bajak is a data scientist at the digital journalism, data, and insights company Advance Local. He was previously the director of data visualization at the Urban Institute and a senior data reporter on USA TODAY's data team, part of the newspaper's national investigative unit. He is a former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at M.I.T., was a founding senior writer at Undark magazine, and was an instructor and graduate programs manager at Northeastern University's School of Journalism. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, M.I.T. Technology Review, OjoPúblico, and Nature, among other outlets.

Taking Action with the Cleveland Open Data Portal; From Actions to Insights

In this workshop, we will teach users how to build automated workflows using a combination of Python, the ArcGIS Online API, and GitHub Actions.

The workshop session will ultimately result in the user scheduling an automated e-mail newsletter containing information from the Cleveland Open Data Portal

Session Goals:

• Write a GitHub action
• Use GitHub action to automate python scripts
• Use the City of Cleveland's open data API
• (If we have time) Send it all in an email

Attendees are expected to:

• bring a computer
• have a github account
• Some small skill with programming preferred
