Darren Doherty is one of the most vital and singular voices on the Irish music scene right now. Following the release of his Hot Press endorsed single 'Violence', Darren returns with his new EP 'darksides'. The EP acts as chrysalis that rebirths Darren in a new light. Four tracks that run the gamut of the human psyche always galloping toward the single sliver of hope at the end of the tunnel. Blending the disparate elements of rock, singer songwriter, experimental music and EDM to provide the vocabulary for his singular voice, 'darksides' feels and sounds like a battle fought and won.
The live show is a blend of electronica, rock and acoustic singer songwriter with stories all told with honestly, wit and emotion.
Hot Press Magazine described Maywoods debut single, as “…an absorbing listen” and “…a heart breaking, hushed hymn, full of passion and pathos”. Those few words not only beautifully describe that single but could easily be used as an all-encompassing summary of Maywood’s music. Maywood’s music deals in the narratives of the everyman, stories we all know; love, loss, isolation, joy, fear, desperation and of course the universal musical Rosetta stone… heart ache.
Drawing on a spring of vintage 70s golden era, rock, pop and country Maywood, distils it down to the common theme they all hold, simple beautiful melody and lyrics with heart. Less is more in that respect, artists like Neil Young, Jackson Browne and the Great American Songwriter John Prine are his living heroes. Like Prine, he tries to find beauty in the mundane, like the stories of people from his own small town, trying to make you smile and cry from one verse to the next and always trying to be - if not original, then authentic, especially when it comes to emotion.
The past three years have been spent trekking all over his native Ireland in an attempt to get his music to a wider audience and gain a foothold of his own. He has been lucky enough to support some great artists along the way, Jason Wilber (USA), Mulligan Brothers (USA), Brace Cooper & Jutz (USA), Pat Reedy (USA), The 4 Of Us, Jonny Fean & Jim Lockhart (Horslips), The Whileaways, The Remedy Club, The Southern Fold, Gareth Dunlop, and Goats Dont Shave.
Rory Nellis is a singer-songwriter and guitarist based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Producing a mix of folk-pop and indie-rock stemming from musings on life, death, relationships and politics he is a surefire hit for fans of Wilco, Villagers and Duke Special.
Rory has been writing and performing since he was a teenager, gaining support from the likes of BBC Radio Ulster (Across The Line, The Arts Show, Electric Mainline and Ralph McLean), RTE 2FM, Hot Press Magazine and The Irish News. Rory has toured all around Ireland and beyond - playing festivals and venues such as The Limelight (Belfast), The Atlantic Sessions, Other Voices (Dingle), Whelan’s (Dublin) and The Bluebird Cafe (Nashville).
Nellis’s second album, There Are Enough Songs in the World, was widely acclaimed, seeing him being heralded as “One of Ireland’s most naturally gifted songsmiths” by The Thin Air. As Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody put it at the time: “the music is sweeping. There's magic in it”.
Rory’s songwriting is filled with flowing melodies and honest, self-reflective lyrics as he aims to strike a balance between serious and playful: tense and relaxed. What comes out is an effortless flow of wonderful noises, poignant sentiments and earworming hooks which you are guided through by Rory’s emotive voice - gentle and comforting in one verse and epic and roaring in another.
