Sociologist and BBC New Generation Thinker Darragh McGee shares his new book and discusses the impact of sports gambling worldwide.About this Event
TPL presents sociologist and BBC New Generation Thinker Darragh McGee in conversation with at the Toronto Reference Library's Atrium.
In his eye-opening new book Imitation Games: How the Gambling Industry Hijacked Sport, University of Bath sociologist Darragh McGee travels the world to tell the incredible story of how online gambling transformed from a provincial cottage industry twenty-five years ago into a billion dollar business. He traces the individuals and companies who brought this brave new world of betting into being, and got very rich doing so. But he also documents the devastation left behind: the inadequate safeguards, the broken lives, the moment when the fun stops.
What does this mean for the future of sport and society? As Canada embraces legal online gambling, with Ontario leading the charge, we're seeing the same patterns that devastated problem gamblers elsewhere, now playing out here. The industry profits only when people lose, yet it has successfully rebranded gambling as harmless entertainment, fan engagement, a way to feel closer to the action. Meanwhile, vulnerable populations, young men especially, face unprecedented risk of addiction.
Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase.
