It's Mr. Poe's birthday, and to celebrate America's master of the macabre, Serpent's Key steps into a weekend of darkness.
Everyone lingers in the shadows sometimes, and in those moments, a poem can be the perfect emotive expression. Dark poetry is more about content than form, spanning the gothic, supernatural and horror genres as well as dipping into the ethereal emotions, even as simple as literal fear of the dark.
Embrace the unknown and let your words wander the echoes of mystery with poetess and historian Rissa Miller at this Dark Poetry workshop. Various exercises will invite you into the depths where spooky themes and haunting imagery come to life. In this workshop, we'll dive into the chilling corners of our imaginations, crafting verses that whisper to enigmatic darkness. Whether you're a huge Poe fan, or drawn to the macabre, the magical, or the dreary, this is your chance to channel it all into your poetry. Join us, if you dare, and unearth the darkness that lies within your soul.
Bring pen, paper (or your digital equivalent), and all your longing, pain, melancholy, and mystery for this interactive literary workshop. Suggested for guests ages 13 and above, though you know your child best; all writing and experience levels are welcome. All guests are encouraged to stay for the open mic afterwards to share their creations or other favorite poems.
Workshop will be taught by published poetess Rissa Miller, a Serpent's Key regular. Rissa has been writing her entire life and her first poems were published in a childrens' anthology when she was in 3rd grade. By 5th grade, she had fully fallen for the dark side of the literary world. Rissa has worked as a Literary Coordinator at Baltimore's Poe House Museum, was an editor at The Baltimore Sun, and was formerly a Vice Pres in the Maryland Writers Association. It is her deep belief that words have the power to change the world.
