Step into the mysterious transformation from darkness to ethereal light in this immersive evening of transcendent choral music. This innovative collaboration between Columbia Chorale and Columbia Chamber Choir centers around Ola Gjeilo's haunting masterwork "Dark Night of the Soul," featuring professional string quartet and piano. As Gjeilo's work unfolds—based on the mystical poetry of St. John of the Cross—the journey from spiritual darkness to enlightenment is mirrored by stunning projected visuals that evolve from the depths of the polar night to the shimmering dance of the aurora borealis. The program pairs Gjeilo's "Dark Night" with other works by the renowned composer as well as pieces by other Nordic composers including Einojuhani Rautavaara, Eriks Ešenvalds, and Pärt Uusberg, each drawing from their unique cultural perspectives to capture moments of profound beauty and introspection.
