Jules Vaquera’s faith is in things like love, compassion, and community. When faced with the endless onslaught of oppressive laws and executive orders put forth by the current administration and the reign of terror wrought by I.C.E., her mental health began to suffer. As a lifelong fan of fiction, she suspended her disbelief, and imagined that witchcraft was real, and that she could use it to make change, bring comfort to her community, and channel their feelings into action. This show is a result of those imaginings.
Jules and Giomara Bazaldua are co-directors of DARK MAGIC FOR DARK TIMES, which is performed by Lisa Suarez, Amalia Ortiz, Florence Bunten, Stephan Gaeth and Jules. Jump-Start’s annual INKubator program supports a San Antonio artist or collective with a small budget, rehearsal space, tech support, the Critical Response Process and a nurturing environment in which to produce their original performance. Audience attendance and feedback supports the further development of the artist’s work.
