About this Event
Were you a Youth Group Kid sometime between 2003-2013 and now you're a queer millennial adult with a complicated relationship to your church upbringing but still blast "Be My Escape" by Relient K when times get angsty? Have you ever wished you could experience 150% of the shenanigans of a classic Youth Group Lock-In but with 0% of the shame or religious trauma? Have you ever thought to yourself "Maybe a Switchfoot themed drag routine might heal something in me?"
Well... (Bob the Tomato voice) Have we got a show for you!
Join us for a night of music, fun, drag, pajamas, poetry, puppets, food, games, prizes, and catharsis, featuring performances by Jack of Diamonds, Thomas A. Eddyson, Captain Rör, Mykal Alder June, Rynnstar, Billie Wood, and more.
What: DARE YOU TO MOVE: A Youth Group Lock-In Themed Variety Show & Pajama Party
When: Friday April 4 from 7-10pm
- Doors open at 7pm for corny Youth Group activities (board games, ice breakers, Werewolf, arts & crafts, etc)
- Show starts at 8pm
Where: 1561 McLendon Avenue NE, 30307 in the basement Gathering Space of Neighborhood Church:
Ages: This is a PG-13 show (adult themes & explicit language)
Dress code: Wear your favorite pajamas, OR your most convincing Millennial Youth Group Kid costume (jean skort, silly bandz, Modesty Bolero, etc), OR dress how you WISH you could've dressed when you were an awkward Youth Group Kid. There will be a costume contest with prizes during intermission!
In honor of my 30th birthday, I, the Jack of Diamonds wanted to throw a tribute party for the kid I was half my life ago: an angsty and confused 15 year old Youth Group Kid blasting Switchfoot's "Meant to Live" in my mom's car, not understanding why the song made me want to scream and cry and cut all my hair off. So here's to that kid, and all the other confused Youth Group Kids out there who are trying to figure out who they are.
A portion of proceeds and 100% of merch sales will be donated to Beloved Arise (the first national organization dedicated to empowering youth to embrace both their faith and their queer identity) and The Trevor Project (a non-profit suicide prevention organization that provides 24/7 crisis support services, research, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ youth).
