Others help shape it.
On Saturday, 17 October, IT Athens welcomes one of the names deeply connected with the history of the early psychedelic trance movement:
DARA-LEE — the man behind Koyote Records.
Born from the underground electronic culture of Brighton, UK, Koyote Records emerged in 1995, at a time when Goa and psychedelic trance were developing their own language, identity and sound. Over the years, the label became associated with a distinctive strain of psychedelic music — dark, experimental, hypnotic and uncompromising.
At the centre of that story was Dara-Lee.
As a DJ, producer and artist, Dara-Lee has spent decades exploring the space between acid house, trance, techno and psychedelic music. His own description of his artistic approach speaks of analogue sounds, organic textures and psychedelic layers, with an emphasis on experimentation, rhythm and sound design.
His presence in the 1990s psychedelic trance movement is documented through a series of releases, collaborations and DJ mixes that have since become part of the history surrounding Koyote Records.
In December 1995, Dara-Lee recorded the legendary Virtual Transgression mix for Chaos Unlimited — a snapshot of the sound and energy of the era, featuring music from Encens, Koxbox, Etnica, Psychaos, Miranda and other defining names of the psychedelic trance movement.
His musical work also extended into production and collaboration.
Dara-Lee was part of ENCENS alongside Marcello Bonifacii, while together with Marcello and Swedish artist Miranda he became part of OMINUS — a project that produced some of the darker and more powerful material associated with Koyote Records during the mid-90s. Ominus released Acid Tester in 1996, followed by the Ominus album in 1997 and further material in 1998.
His production credits also include the 1997 Koyote release Fluff Killer by Menis, where Dara-Lee collaborated with Nick Smith.
But Dara-Lee's importance isn't simply about a catalogue of old records.
It is about a musical philosophy.
A sound that was never designed to follow trends.
A psychedelic language built from hypnotic rhythms, strange textures, acid movement, dark atmospheres and an instinct for pushing the dancefloor somewhere unexpected.
Decades later, that spirit remains active.
In 2025, Koyote Records celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special compilation and a DJ mix curated by Dara-Lee, revisiting the label's history through music from artists including Encens, Modern Primitives, Miranda, Xenomorph, Hux Flux, Ominus and others.
And the story continues.
The team behind ZNA Gathering recently described their reconnection with Dara-Lee as the return of a key figure from Koyote Records' legacy, highlighting his ability to move between intense psychedelic night music, energetic Goa and different sides of the Koyote sound.
