After his exile from Florence, Dante Alighieri spent several years in the Veneto area: the Divine Comedy is thus full of references to the Venetian territory, cities, culture, and historical characters. Dante could not know that centuries after his writing of the Divine Comedy, in 1875, someone would publish a full metric translation of the Divine Comedy in the Venetian language – one of the most brilliant versions in a language different from Dante’s original. The talk will present and compare some of the most famous scenes of Dante’s Inferno in the original Tuscan and in the sublime Venetian translation by Giuseppe Cappelli.
Alessandro Mocellin, 36, teaches Italian language and literature, history and geography in an Italian school. He is a Venetian language teacher, author, translator, and project manager in the cultural and educational sector. Alessandro holds a LLM in International Law, MA in Linguistics, and is undertaking an MA in History. He is the Director of the Academia de ła Bona Creansa [Academy of the Venetian Language], an accredited NGO for the UNESCO 2003 Convention.
This initiative is part of “La nostra lingua – Our language. Cusì parlemo – so we speak (Venetian). A Journey through History, Language, Culture: Exhibitions, Lessons, Workshops, Seminars held in Italian and in English by Prof. Alessandro Mocellin (Academia de ła Bona Creansa).
