The beloved Danish String Quartet returns to the Twin Cities, following their hugely successful performance of the Beethoven String Quartet Cycle in 2021. As The New York Times put it: “The Danish play as if they have abandoned their individual personalities entirely to serve the collective—as if they were joined on a single instrument, armed with four bows.”After meeting as children at a Danish summer music camp, the quartet’s mutual love of soccer and string quartets led to their transition into a serious ensemble while still in their teens at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen. Now with 13 recordings to their credit, the Danish regularly tour to the major music capitals of the world and are recognized as one of the finest string quartets performing today.
While they often delve into works by great masters such as Beethoven, Bartok, and Mozart, the Danish String Quartet is also well known for its recordings and performances of Nordic folk music. In 2017, NPR Music named the quartet’s second folk music album, Last Leaf, the “Best Classical Album of 2017”, and in 2019, the quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance” for its album Prism I.
