About this Event
Running February through May of 2023, Living Futures Saturdays is a monthly event series featuring climate-engaged presenters from a variety of disciplines. Join us as we listen, learn, and create community and new knowledge. Events will comprise presentations by each of two speakers, followed by community discussion and synthesis.
Register here for VIRTUAL attendance to the May 6 event, which will be held in person at Perfect Lovers in Durham, NC, 3-5pm EST, and feature Black geographies scholar Danielle Purifoy and photographer Justin Cook. Advance tickets required.
Dr. Danielle Purifoy is an assistant professor in the Department of Geography at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed a Ph.D in Environmental Politics and African American Studies at Duke University, a B.A. in English and Political Science from Vassar College, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Purifoy’s current research traces the roots of contemporary environmental conditions in the U.S. South, specifically in Black towns dating back to the post-Bellum era. She has also written about the legal dimensions of environmental justice and equity in food systems. Purifoy is the former Race and Place Editor at Scalawag, a magazine devoted to Southern politics and culture, and the former Board Chair of the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Inside Climate News.
Justin Cook is a photographer based in Durham, North Carolina but works everywhere. His long-term photographic essays tell stories about resilience in communities living along the edges in America, often by focusing on environmental issues and climate change. He believes storytelling that not only shines light on these issues, but also investigates solutions is crucial to social change. Justin is a 2006 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He is an FAA licensed drone pilot. He is a multiple Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting grantee, and his work has been funded by The Solutions Journalism Network Climate Solutions Fellowship, The North Carolina Arts Council, The Puffin Foundation; and honored by The Magenta Foundation, Photolucida, POYi, The Society of Environmental Journalists, The Society of Professional Journalists, and American Photography. When he is not making photographs, you can find him hunting for fossilized shark teeth in eastern North Carolina.

Living Futures Saturdays is hosted by The School for Living Futures, an interdisciplinary, experimental school in Durham, NC dedicated to creating new knowledge and possibility for our climate-changed future. Our mission is to become a hub for programming and projects that combine art, climate work, kinship and community, and that bring together the knowledge of artists, healers, scientists, activists, ancestral wisdom holders, scholars, designers, and storytellers. Our offerings will include speaker series, workshops, performances, and collaborative creative projects. We aim to counteract climate despair, denial, and inaction, and to empower people with the skills and ideas necessary to become changemakers in their own realms and create living futures for people and the planet.
