Daniel P. Horan, OFM, PhD | The Difference Love Makes: Theological Reconsiderations on the Reason for the Incarnation
Oct 14 | 7:00PM – 8:30PM Central Time | FREE LECTURE | IN-PERSON AND ONLINE OPTIONS AVAILABLE
2021 Louis G. Vance Lecture of Systematic Theology
Most Christians live their lives with the presumption that sin is the reason that God became human. The standard view suggests that the Word would not have become flesh in Jesus Christ if Adam and Eve had not sinned, but because of their transgression and selfishness, which affected the whole of humanity, Christ had to enter the world as one of us to “clean up our mess.” While certainly a popular perspective, this is not the only orthodox explanation for the divine reasoning behind the Incarnation. This year’s Louis G. Vance Lecture in Systematic Theology focuses on the lesser-known theological tradition that has argued from the outset of Christianity that God would have become human even if humanity had not sinned; that the primary motivation for the Incarnation is not sin, but divine love.
