The Jalsa community cordially invites you to a night of celebration.

A rare chance to eat, drink, and dance through an authentic Durga Puja evening, right here in Brooklyn.

It is that time of year when India’s beloved Goddess/Devi Durga descends to the earthly realm for nine divine days. This is Navaratri, one of the world’s great festivals honoring the Goddess who embodies victory over evil.

A celebration of Shakti: raw, primordial energy, boundless creativity, compassion, and strength.

What to expect

FOOD

An exquisite all you can eat buffet of favorites from Jalsa’s beloved kitchen.

Dance like EVERYONE is watching

We’ll learn Dandiya - A communal lively North-West Indian folk dance performed with sticks (provided). The floor fills with Bollywood and energetic folk beats, powered by devotion.

We are in this together, to infuse the dance floor with a shared rhythm.
A healthy mixed COMMUNITY

For seven years Jalsa has grown a family of loyal guests from every background and nationality. This night is for those already familiar with the culture and for everyone who has become part of this shared space. You are all welcome.

Come into a sacred atmosphere infused with Vedic prayers, a real Durga idol, and ritual.
What to wear

Bring Indian clothes if you have them. A skirt and tank top work too — we will provide bindis and dupattas. Dress as colorfully as you can.

The Devi loves color.

About Ma Durga

Durga sits astride a lion, her fearless form with ten hands showing power that reaches from every direction and can meet many forces at once. The lion (or tiger) She rides represents Her command over wild instinct, courage and supreme strength.

In India, worship of the Goddess holds a tender place because devotees see Her as the Great Mother: compassionate, graceful, and beautiful.

Scripture says the universe itself was born from the dust of her feet.

A measure of how vast this creative, fearless power is. We call reality is merely the blessings of the Devi. It is in Her creation that we live.

It is Her grace that we pray for in these nine days of Navratri.

For Navaratri we decorate our idols, offer daily ceremony, ritual, and mantra. We invite divine presence into our own lives. Of the nine nights, one is set aside for ecstatic dance through the joy of Dandiya.

Here in Newkirk and Ditmas, this is our third year of bringing Ma Durga home to the neighborhood.
At Jalsa, authentic Indian rituals will be performed with a Vedic priest as the top-floor banquet hall becomes a serene temple. And our dance floor for the night of the 17th.
All are welcome.
