We are very pleased to have Sarah Smith reading for us at the first Dandelions Poetry event after the summer break! There will be the usual supportive and friendly Dandelions open mic, so please email [email protected] if you would like a space.
Here is Sarah's bio:
Sarah began writing seriously in 2017, after more than a decade working as a nurse. During a difficult journey to motherhood, she turned to writing as a form of self-expression, and what started as a personal outlet soon grew into a passion. Her first poem was published in an anthology of local poets in 2020, and the following year her work appeared in When This is All Over (Creative Ink, 2021), a charity anthology in support of Rennie Grove Hospice Care.
In 2022, one of her poems reached the second round of the Bridport Prize. Encouraged by these successes, she applied for and completed an MA in Creative Writing, graduating with distinction in December 2024.
Throughout her MA, Sarah shared her work at public readings—including alongside poet Zaffar Kunial—and represented Nottingham Trent University at the Nottingham Poetry Festival. She also gained experience as a shadow writer with First Story and Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature, supporting both adults and young people in creative projects.
She had poems published in the NTU Creative Writing 2023 cohort anthology ‘Bones’ and the Nottingham Writers Studio 2023 anthology ‘My Happy Place’. More recently, she has had a poem accepted by Nottingham Writers Studio 2024 Autumn anthology, ‘The light is fading’. Due out late September.
Her poems have explored conflict in pregnancy and parenthood, but more recently, examined her childhood in a military family.
