The South African Gumboot Dance and Step Dance are connected over distances and through sounds! STOMPS, STEPS and CLAPS make up this exciting class ofnon-verbal communication.
For ages 3 to 13. No registration is required.
History: South African Gumboot Dance emerged through mine workers in the times of Apartheid. Miners created a dance language in the midst of silence and suffering. Later, South African Gumboot Dance traveled north to the United States; embroiled in Segregation and Jim Crow. Gumboot strongly influenced the origin of African-American Step Dance, founded in the early 1900s, with the first black sororities and fraternities. Explore nonverbal communication through a system of stomps, claps and chants bound together by a strong sense of community & belonging.
