Composed of speaking and moving scenes, set in a room within another room, “The Play” unfolds among everyday objects that are organized, reorganized, and undone. Three performers frame and reframe recurring situations that blur the lines between what was, what is, and what could be. Continuing Durning’s long-term research into nonstopping, “The Play” expands this practice into new territory—blending an existential, Beckettian world of rhythmic language with virtuosic, extemporaneous dancing. In a time marked by upheaval, the work contends with meaning-making and togetherness amid ongoing calamity. It asks: How do we begin again—over and over—as an act of repair in the face of loss and uncertainty?
